Commissioner, Members of the European Parliament and Industry Leaders Gathered for the Future Energy Market

January 31st, 2017 Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič, Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) and industry leaders gathered for high-level discussions on the future energy market. The discussions on the future energy market are timely with the presentation of the policy package ‘Clean Energy for All’ – a presentation that the European Commission now hands over for negotiations within the European Parliament.

Energy Solutions gathered decision-makers and industry leaders for a debate on the proposals at the onset of the new year just shortly after the presentation of the policy package the end of the past year, ‘Clean Energy for All’.

More than anything else, the (policy) package stands for an attempt to cope with new realities of the global energy transition, said Commissioner Šefčovič, who also took the chance to ask the audience to ‘be unreasonable’ in the sense of the British writer George Bernard Shaw – that is; to ambitiously try to adapt and change the world.

The Commissioner then turned to address the new market design, research and innovation, mechanisms to ensure reliable and adequate generation capacity – and the role of the EU in the global effort against climate change. After the meeting he expressed his gratitude for the Energy Solutions initiative:

It was extremely useful to go into the details and to discuss it with members of the European Parliament, who are now co-legislators, whom we will work on it with. Also, to listen to the representatives of the industries, what they see as the most important and what are their priorities or where they expect problems, said Vice President Šefčovič.

To MEP from the S&D Group (PL) and Vice President to Energy Solutions, Miroslav Poche, talking to stakeholders, consumers and businesses working with energy is paramount.

We need a very deep, consumer driven and consumer orientated market reform, we need to invest very largely in grids and connectivity, and in the end, we need to be more ambitious in energy efficiency and renewables, said Mr. Poche:

It’s very important for us to have feedback from outside the Parliament. Otherwise, you cannot go through these files effectively, he said.

For Advisory Board member VELUX, Energy Solutions enables stakeholders to add to the debate and to exchange views with both the decision-makers and with other key stakeholders across the energy sector, explains Senior Vice President for Marketing and Product Management, Michael K. Rasmussen.

On one hand, this is a very complex and broad set of changes that are on the table, and on the other hand, I believe we need that – and therefore we need forums like Energy Solutions to contribute to the consolidation of all the different viewpoints.

The European Parliamentary Network on Energy Solutions (Energy Solutions) spans across national, sectorial and individual interests, facilitating a direct response to the ongoing discussions on the European Energy Union.
